A map of the Senegal River through Senegal to the goldfields in Mali. Also marked is the 'Pays des Mandingos', the homeland of the Mandinka tribe. It is estimated that during three centuries of the slave trade a third of the Mandinka population was taken to the Americas, so that a significant proportion of African Americans are descended from them.

With engraved vignette scenes of Sierra Leone and the old slave posts of Christiansborg, Cape Coast Castle and Bakel. Of particular interest is the early depiction of the Republic of Liberia, founded in 1849 by African Americans who had been freed from slavery. Monrovia, the only foreign capital city named after a U.S. President (James Monroe), is marked.
