Rouffach, called Rubeaquum (red water) by the Romans. An episocopal fief of the Archbishop of Strasbourg at the time of publication, the city was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), then captured by the French with the rest of Alsace. Under French rule it became important as a wine-growing centre.

At the time of publication the island was controlled by the city-state Genoa, but the next year (1736) a German adventurer, Theodor Freiherr von Neuhoff, was crowned King of Corsica in an unsuccessful attempt at independence. Corsica remained under Genoese control until its purchase by France in 1768.

The dedication cartouche top right now reads 'To the Wor.p.full S.r Henry Calverley of Eriholme in the Countij of Jorke knt this map is Humby D. bÿ M: Pitt'. However the enterprise was too ambitious: only four volumes were published and Pitt spent nearly three years in Fleet Prison for debt.
