Accompanying Lord Macartney, who had been sent to Cape Town in 1797 as the first governor of Britain's new colony, Barrow traveled extensively into the interior. His task was to reconcile disputes among the Boers, Hottentots, and Kaffers, who were each striving to graze and hunt over the same territory, and to map the troubled area. Map of southern Africa covering mainly the modern states of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, the area of the the Empire of Great Zimbabwe (c.1450-1629). Its capital was the 'Great Zimbabwe', marked here as 'Zimbaoe'. The basis of its wealth were the numerous gold mines marked on the map (often believed to be the mines of King Solomon), but when these gave out they turned to slave trading with the Portuguese of the Mozambique ports.
