London, Bassett & Chiswell, 1676. 390 x 520mm. Coloured.

First issued 1611-12, the plate originally had portraits of James VI of Scotland (also James I of England), his wife Anne and their two sons, Henry & Charles (later Charles I). However in 1652 the plates was re-engraved: as the English Civil War had done away with the Royal family, the portraits were replaced with costume vignettes of a "Scotch" (i.e. lowland) man & woman and their wild "Highland" neighbours. The checked garments worn by the second pair are considered to be one of the earliest depictions of tartan. Although the Commonwealth had ended in 1660 the commoners remained. SPEE0016
