Corsica, with a fine maritime cartouche. At the time of publication the island was controlled by the city-state Genoa, but the next year (1736) a German adventurer, Theodor Freiherr von Neuhoff, was crowned King of Corsica in an unsuccessful attempt at independence. Corsica remained under Genoese control until its purchase by France in 1768. HOMA1032
