The Baltic coast of Germany, marking Bremen and Hamburg. This example comes from volume 3 of the 'English Atlas', a collboration between English and Dutch publishers to produce a 12-volume atlas for the English market. Some of the maps were printed in Amsterdam, but some, like this one, were transported to England and re-engraved. The dedication cartouche top right now reads 'To the Wor.p.full S.r Henry Calverley of Eriholme in the Countij of Jorke knt this map is Humby D. bÿ M: Pitt'. However the enterprise was too ambitious: only four volumes were published and Pitt spent nearly three years in Fleet Prison for debt. JANS0064 |
