Jansson Brunswick

Johannes Jansson.
Serennissimo Principi ac Domino D. Christiano Duci Brunsvicensi et Luneburgensi Hanc accuratissimi sui Ducatus Brunsuicensis Tabulam dedicat consecratque Iohannes Ianssonius.
Oxford: Moses Pitt, c.1682. 405 x 495mm. Original colour.
£200
Map of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (which evolved into Hanover), decorated with a superb dedication cartouche in full colour. This example comes from volume 3 of the 'English Atlas', a collboration between English and Dutch publishers to produce a 12-volume atlas for the English market. Some of the maps were printed in Amsterdam, but some were transported to England and re-engraved. The enterprise was too ambitious: only four volumes were published and Pitt spent nearly three years in Fleet Prison for debt. JANS0080
