Johannes Jansson.
Spitzberga.
Amsterdam, Schenk & Valk, c.1700. 410 x 505mm. Original body colour with later additions. Repairs to verdigris cracking.
£1,250
An uncommon chart of Spitzbergen or Svalbard, first published late in Jansson's career in his Sea Atlas in 1657. In 1694 the plate was acquired by Schenk and Valk who issued it with their names added. Decorated with cartouches for the title and scale, it also has a vignette scene of whaling, the reason that Spitzbergen was important enough to have a map devoted to it. JANS0065 |
