Zatta Bering Straits

Antonio Zatta.
Nouve Scoperte de' Russi al Nord Del Mare del Sud si nell' Asia, che nell' America.
Venice, 1776. 320 x 415mm. Original colour.
£360
The north Pacific, with an invented Northwest Passage between Hudson's Bay with Cape Fortune. For some reason the title vignette shows an elephant, rhinoceros, ostrich and crocodile. It is based on the map by J.N. De L'Isle (brother of the more famous French cartographer), compiled from Russian sources. However he accepted the spurious account of Admiral de Font and added the fictitious detail. ZATT0065
